On Saturday 19 September, Stowe welcomed more than 140 Old Stoics, together with their guests and families, back to the School for a memorable Old Stoic Day filled with nostalgia, friendship and shared experiences.
The day began with a special Chapel Service, during which Dr Wallersteiner delivered a eulogy in remembrance of former Headmaster Christopher Turner (1979-1989). The service provided an opportunity for the Stowe community to reflect on Christopher’s legacy and the lasting impact he had on so many Old Stoics and former Staff during his time at the School.
Following the service, Old Stoics joined current pupils for tours of the Houses. For many, this was the highlight of the day as they revisited former studies, dormitories and common rooms, sharing stories from their School days and comparing memories with today’s Stoics. Tales of House traditions, lifelong friendships and memorable moments echoed through the corridors as old and current generations connected through their shared Stowe experience.
Lunch was another nostalgic highlight. Guests enjoyed a traditional lamb hotpot lunch, served through the Servery, allowing many Old Stoics to relive a familiar part of School life. Reunion Year Groups sat together, exchanging stories and reminiscing about everything from house rivalries and food fights to the friendships and adventures that have remained vivid decades later.
The afternoon offered a variety of activities across the estate. Many guests joined Old Stoic Andrew Rudolph (Cobham 55) for a fascinating Vanbrugh 300 tour, exploring the architectural significance of Stowe and its place within Sir John Vanbrugh’s enduring legacy. Others took the opportunity to tour the gardens, visit the Equestrian Centre, or enjoy watching the Colts rugby match on the North Front. Throughout the day, there was a wonderful sense of connection between past and present. Whether revisiting old classrooms, walking familiar paths through the grounds, or reconnecting with friends.
Old Stoic Day provided countless opportunities to celebrate shared memories and lifelong bonds. It was a truly special occasion, filled with laughter, reflection and trips down memory lane, reminding everyone that while Stowe continues to evolve, the spirit of the Old Stoic community remains as strong as ever.
