Seas4Life Foundation: Connecting Communities to the Ocean

Founded by marine conservationist Julie Church, Seas4Life is a marine expedition company operating across the Western Indian Ocean (WIO), designing immersive ocean journeys that combine extraordinary wildlife encounters with meaningful contributions to marine conservation.

Each expedition is shaped by a specific place, season, and purpose. Working alongside conservation organisations, marine scientists, and local communities, Seas4Life creates experiences where guests don’t just observe the ocean, they actively contribute to understanding and protecting it.

This vision also gave rise to the Seas4Life Foundation, supported directly by every expedition. The Foundation focuses on building ocean literacy, increasing access to the sea, and supporting locally rooted conservation initiatives along the Kenyan coast.

Discover Ocean Initiative

Our flagship program, the Discover Ocean Initiative (DOI), was created to address a striking disconnect: many children growing up along Kenya’s coast have never entered the ocean, despite living beside one of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems. DOI takes local students on a structured journey from classroom to coral reef across five phases.

The program begins with in-school sessions, followed by beach cleans and rock pooling days that build environmental awareness. It then progresses to swimming lessons that develop water safety and confidence, culminating in guided snorkelling experiences on local reefs. For many children, this is their first encounter with the ocean, sparking curiosity, connection, and a sense of responsibility for its protection.

Our programmes align with the UN’s Ocean Literacy Principles and Kenya’s key marine ecosystems, combining scientific learning with practical skills such as waste management, reef ecology, and sustainable fishing practices.

In 2026, our first DOI Pod removed over 100 kg of beach waste and connected students with local Beach Management Units to explore conservation and sustainable livelihoods. We aim to reach 80–100 students this year while expanding our impact through Big Blue Days, global events that bring ocean education into classrooms beyond the coast.

Our Vision and How You Can Help

We aim to expand our reach to more schools and communities, building a generation of informed and empowered ocean advocates. You can support this work by sponsoring a child or DOI Pod, joining Big Blue Days as a school or organisation, or helping amplify our message by sharing our journey.

Through donations, partnerships, or raising awareness, your support creates real impact. Together, we can inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.
