This May’s Speech Day was a wonderful occasion, bringing the whole Stowe community together to celebrate the School. With excellent weather throughout, the day had a relaxed and uplifting atmosphere enjoyed by pupils, parents, staff and Old Stoics alike.
A highlight, as ever, was the Classic Car Show on the North Front, hosted by the Old Stoic Society. It provided a striking welcome for guests and featured an especially strong and varied selection of cars this year, with many rare and interesting entries on display.
The Steady Barker Award for the most interesting story was awarded to current parent Ems Schelfhout for the remarkable story behind her Alfa Romeo Spider 2000 Veloce. The car had belonged to her first love in her early twenties, and they travelled across Europe together before it was sold. Ems spent over 30 years searching for it before eventually giving up.
After a difficult period during Covid, she decided to look for a similar model, hoping to bring some joy back into her family life. When a red Spider appeared for sale, she noticed it carried her old “MET” number plate. Despite being told it had never been silver, further research confirmed it was indeed her original car.
Now reunited with it, Ems and her children are creating new memories together. It is, as she describes, a true full-circle moment.
A very deserving winner, and a fitting highlight of a memorable day.
